In an inspiring turn of events, Colonel Lawrence Seddoh Agbedoawu, a military officer with over 14 years of experience in fish farming, has become a symbol of resilience and self-reliance.
Recently awarded as the Best Fish Farmer in the Weija Gbawe municipality, Colonel Agbedoawu passionately encourages Ghana’s youth to embrace farming as a viable career path, dismissing the common perception of agriculture as a “menial” job.
Reflecting on his background, Colonel Agbedoawu shared that his upbringing in a less privileged family deeply shaped his commitment to farming. “Growing up, my family relied on subsistence agriculture to putv food on the table,” he said.
“I saw firsthand how it sustained us, so I committed myself to farming, even alongside my military duties.”
To balance his demanding roles, Colonel Agbedoawu employs workers to manage the day-to-day operations on his fish farm while he oversees the technical aspects.
He also actively participates in training programs to stay updated on best practices in aquaculture, ensuring that his operation remains both efficient and productive.
His farm utilizes a cage system, with metal cages supported by buoyant drums that securely house the fish, preventing escape and promoting sustainable growth.
While youth in Ghana often dream of fast money or pursuing opportunities abroad, Colonel Agbedoawu encourages them to consider the benefits of local farming.
“Besides providing a stable income, fish farming is a way to contribute to national food security,” he emphasized. “It’s not just about personal gain; you’re also supporting Ghana’s future food supply.”
Municipal Chief Executive Officer Hon. Michael Dankwa echoed Colonel Agbedoawu’s message, urging young people to see farming as a profitable and secure profession, particularly as the government stands ready to assist them with essential farming inputs.
In his journey from a humble background to a recognized figure in fish farming, Colonel Agbedoawu’s story serves as an inspiring example of resilience, determination, and the transformative power of agriculture in Ghana’s future.
