To continually spread the gentleman’s game in Ghana, the Obuasi Cricket Club has scheduled Saturday, June 24 to hold a Cricket Festival for boys and girls between the ages of 8 to 15 at the KNUST Obuasi Campus Cricket Oval.
The first ever edition of the Cricket festival has activities like Coaching clinic and fun games scheduled from 9am through to 1pm.
Initiator and one of the organizers, Rhyda Ofori Amanfo, tells TalksenseSports, the objective of this exercise.
“Gone are the days when we used to have about 200+ people taking part in cricket activities in Obuasi, to the extent of having inter-school in both Obuasi East and West. The love is gone and we don’t have the people anymore. We are organizing this program to bring back the lamplight of cricket in Obuasi again. The beauty of this program will bring us all together again and we’ll be able to train these kids to become one of us in the new future.”
Rhyda, who is captain of the women’s senior national cricket team added, that Sunday Special after this event is certain.
“After this program, we’ll schedule our training activities in a more professional way to even enable us play Sunday Special, every other Sunday. I know my achievements for the program will be long term process but that is not what I am looking for. The thing is, we must first of all get the numbers, so we begin from there.”
All who are interested in knowing how to play cricket will be given the opportunity to learn the basics and all one is to do is to be there in their sports wears and kicks to match to have fun amidst learning.
Apart from Accra, that has many cricket talents due to the presence of an Oval at Achimota, Obuasi can boast of several talents as well, especially the women, who form a chunk of the national team currently.
Kids are expected from Tutuka, Dominase, Len Clay, Akaporiso, Odumase, Nhiaso, Mangoase, Wawasi, Brahabebome, Bongoberri, Anyinam, Binsere, Mameniwa, Ntonsua, and neighboring towns in the Ashanti Region and beyond, as some national players plus coaches will lead the way.
Cricket has steadily also grown in Obuasi since the establishment of the AngloGold Ashanti, as the expatriates engage in matches at the Oval, which saw many Ghanaian Cricket players (many who have held positions at the Ghana Cricket Association) travel from Accra to play. It is time, for the revamping of the game many loved in the gold city and that time is now.
