They bring fabric to life and ensured they beat the likes of Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Volta River Estate Limited (VREL) in the finals of the football game to lift the trophy of the maiden edition of the Dam City Corporate Games on Saturday, April 29, 2023.

The Dam City Corporate Games, held at the ATL Akotex Park to foster unity among the corporate bodies and enhance productivity while socializing, also had indoors games like Oware, Ludu, Cards playing, Scrabble, Draughts as well as Table Tennis in a non-scoring form.

In a charged atmosphere, initiated by Jama from the early hours of the day and ignited by the arrival of an already charged VREL staff, the Akotex Park became a place to be, with cheering, chanting and dancing to wonderful music at the background.

It all begun after Akosombo Textiles Limited (ATL) beat their nemesis Volta River Authority (VRA) in the opening match 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 game.

VRA scored from the spot in the first half and the battle to equalize saw an entertaining and fun filled football. ATL finally got their equalizer through defender, Bernard Holbrook Smith, who latched unto a rebound ball in the minutes to end the game, getting their fans into extreme joy.

Moments after leveling the score, a player was brought down again and gave VRA the opportunity to take the lead for the second time and win it, but the kick was blasted over the bar. VRA consequently missed two more in the penalty shootout, losing to ATL 2-4.

The other game to decide who plays ATL in the finals was more entertaining and saw an 8-goal thriller between Volta River Estate Limited and Hiking For Purpose. Five (5) minutes into the game, Hiking For Purpose had conceded 2 goals, with 1 own goal by Ebenezer Asumi as he tried to clear a cross. Hiking pulled one back through a freekick by their captain Prince Tettehku and an unforgettable mistake by VREL goalkeeper to reduce the deficit to 2-1. VREL had a cushion from Nyanyuie Atakpa, wrapping up the first half by 3-1.

Volta River Estate Limited scored their fourth goal 8 minutes into the second half with a great strike by Johnson Senyo. Hiking for Purpose took advantage of the several changes by VREL and got their second goal through another mistake of the goalkeeper. With another goalkeeper coming in for VREL and the effect of their changes noticed by their fans, Hiking got two more goals to tally 4-4 minutes before the whistle went to end the game.

VREL had a second chance to win the match in the penalty shoot out by 5-4 and had their captain, Barnabas Kumordzi carried high in cheers and wild jubilation after he scored the winning goal.

Hiking settled for 3rd place after beating VRA by a goal to nil (1-0). VRA had to trail from the first half and had chances to come back into the game but all blasted away.

In the finals, VREL blasted a penalty away 13 minutes into the game and were later punished by ATL yet in the first half through Emmanuel Annan, who beat the offside trap and latched onto a pass by Saviola to make it 1-0.

It was a very tough final as both sides played very well, with VREL ensuring they don’t repeat same mistakes made in the first game. With some very smart and brilliant players upfront, VREL got an equalizer with a belter from Lawyer Robert 10 minutes into the second half and the fans filled the park with their jubilation.

The jubilation didn’t last, as ATL took the lead again 10 minutes later through a 25-yard strike by Saviola, as VRE goalie had no answers to. Much as VREL pushed to level again, ATL held on till the final whistle went to end the game.

A beautifully designed wooden plague was presented to ATL captain, Emmanuel Annan as they cheered to a host and win maiden Corporate Games.

The non scoring indoor games however saw ATL win Cards playing, Ludu and Draughts, with Hiking showing class and winning the Table Tennis.

Organizers are hoping to make it an annual event as the on-day event was very successful, with the availability of food, drinks and medical care.

ATL had organized two separate fun games between Junior and Senior Staff ahead of this corporate games.
