Part 11: Patience

Text: James 5:8
You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand (ESV).

Patience is very important in life because it has eternal value. It is an everlasting riches for all those who have it. Friends, to be honest with you, patience is a hard road to follow, but it is one that is worthwhile. When I googled the meaning of the word “patience” it said, “the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset.” It never ceases to amaze me that a few words can be used to define a concept that is so difficult to practise at times. What does patience mean to you as a child of God?

Patience is waiting on God for His appointed time. Scientifically, when you are patient, it improves your mental and physical health, it is a good way to practice faith and can bring you great peace. The the benefits of patience go beyond this life. He who is patient in this life has great rewards in eternity. We live in a world where things are changing rapidly.

The rapid pace of life often brings with it the tendency for instant gratification. For many of us, when we want something, we want it now. Some people even equate delay of getting what one is looking for to God. To them, waiting on God or being patient is simply a waste of time. But it is never a waste of time to wait on God. One of the best examples of patience in the Bible is Abraham.

When Abraham was around 75 years old, God promised him that he would have a child. But this promise was fulfilled until he was 100 years old. The Bible says that Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise (Heb 6:15, NIV). The Apostle Paul describes Abraham’s faith this way: “Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised” (Rom 4:20-21).

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, teach me to be patient in my walk with You. In Jesus Mighty Name I pray with much thanksgiving, amen.
