Part 3: Godliness!

Text: 1 Tim 4:7-8
7 Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; 8 For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come (ESV).

Godliness is one of the everlasting riches that God wishes that each one of us attains. Godliness has to do with being like God and this is God’s ultimate wish. He wants us to be like Him. I hope you have checked the two words well? In case you haven’t, just take a look at the words: God and God-liness. God is saying that we should exercise ourselves so we can be Godly.

This is a mystery that has been unraveled. In this fourth chapter of 1 Timothy, the young Pastor Timothy has already been warned about false teachers. In response, he needs to be diligent in learning, living, teaching and defending the truth. Paul then makes a comparison here with physical training. Physical fitness is good, since it has benefits. But physical fitness is only temporary. Spiritual fitness, then, is much more beneficial, since its effects last forever.

Many good things have value in this life. We all run and do some light exercise in order to maintain some level of fitness. And that is good. But it is only valuable so long as we live in this tent of flesh. And the same is true for many other activities we do. But no matter how many miles we run and do other exercises in this life, it has no value the moment we die. But godliness does.

Godliness trains not just our physical body, but our spirits as well. And that training will have value for eternity. That makes training in godliness even more important. It is the training that will make a lasting difference, even after this tent (physical body) we dwell in is destroyed. Training in godliness involves Bible study, meditation, prayer, fasting, worship and Christian fellowship. Always remember that, training is hard, and it involves self-sacrifice. But it is well worth it in the long run. These spiritual exercises have everlasting benefits.

Prayer:
Great and Mighty God, thank You for this Word. I humbly pray for Your strength to train myself for godliness. In Jesus Name I pray, amen.

Be a blessing to others by sharing it with them 💦🙏
