Part 4: Befitting Or Proper Burial!

Text: Eccl 6:3
“A man may father a hundred children and live many years. No matter how long he lives, if he is not satisfied by good things and does not even have a proper burial, I say that a stillborn child is better off than he” (CSB).

Dying in the Lord and receiving a befitting burial is an everlasting riches. The type of burial a person receives after death is very important. Every person’s burial mostly depends on the type of life they lived when they were alive. I hope you have seen how people like drunkards and wee smokers are buried compared to how those who die in the Lord are buried. You can clearly see the difference. This is what the writer of the Book of Ecclesiastes is talking about. Undoubtedly, judgement awaits each one of us when we die.

We are going to be judged. In today’s opening verse, Solomon contrasts two vastly different and comparatively extreme life experiences. He says that, a man may father a hundred children and live many years. However, if this man does not have a proper or Befitting burial, Solomon contrasts this man with a miscarriage or stillbirth, and pronounces that, stillbirth as being better off.

The stillborn child enters the world then dies without any life experience. There is, therefore, nothing to remember. Someone once said that, “a stillborn child comes in futility, passes into obscurity, and never really has an identity.” The stillborn does not experience life at all (never sees the sun) and does not come into a state of self-awareness.

But such a child who dies instantly after birth is declared to be better off than the prosperous man who did not have a befitting burial. Even though the man had a much longer life than the stillborn, his experience ends up in the same obscurity and futility. When he does not die in the Lord, his burial will certainly not be done in the Lord and that is why it is not a befitting one. So just as a stillborn child enters the world and dies instantly, this man enters the next world and will die instantly (will be sent to hell). Your death matters sod die in the Lord!!

Prayer:
Almighty God, help me to live in You and die in You so my soul will not perish in hell. May Your Name be praised for an answered prayer. In Jesus Name I pray, amen.

Be a blessing to others by sharing it with them
