Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia says the ¢1 fuel levy imposed by the government is eight times what was charged for the scrapped Electronic Transfer Levy popularly known as (E-levy).
Addressing some New Patriotic Party (NPP) members on June 4, 2025, he weighed in on the new levy as he juxtaposed it with the infamous one that was introduced by his government.
“They complained about the E-levy and promised to scrap it. They indeed scrapped it but replaced it with Dumsor Levy. It is eight times the E-levy.
“When you buy a litre of petrol, you will pay ¢1. If you buy ¢1000 of petrol, you will pay ¢83 as tax. For E-levy, we were paying ¢10 tax for ¢1000 transfer.”
According to the 2024 Presidential Candidate of the NPP, this action of the government exposes the dishonesty of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“NDC lied and we are all witnesses to that. Just last night they introduced the Dumsor Levy…There are more to come. By 2028, Ghanaians will know they are liars and bring the NPP back to power.”
The Minister for Finance Cassiel Ato Forson said the levy aim is to raise additional revenue to support the payment of energy sector shortfalls, reduce energy sector legacy debts and stabilise power supply.
He stated that the levy will serve as a dedicated source of funding to the energy sector and the proceeds will be earmarked for the procurement of liquid fuel for power generation given that the current electricity tariff paid by consumers does not include the cost of fuel used for power generation.
