Founder and President of the Georgia Women Cricket Association (GWCA), Petal Samuels honored with her presence, the second edition of the Obuasi Cricket Festival held at the KNUST-Obuasi campus Oval, from Monday to Saturday, June 24 to 29, 2024.

Ms Petal, who took part in the training of over 540 children between the ages of 8 and 15, from Monday to Friday was enthused about the turn out and potentials and advised for the development of officials too.

“I was invited by Ms Rhyda Ofori and I said yes; I came, I saw and I enjoyed. This is my first opportunity seeing cricket anywhere in Africa, and what I have seen over the past week is quite warming to the heart, that there is a lot of potential here. This is considered grassroot Cricket and there is a lot of roots that can be planted and harvested over the years to come.”

“Continue what you are doing, not only to develop the cricketers, but develop officials, like umpires and coaches.” She added in an interview with TalksenseSports.

Some kids performing catching drills taught them by coaches.

The level 3 umpire, did not only honor the invite to train but also to umpire the mixed gender T20 game between Larry Hill CC and Van Etten CC on Saturday, which the latter won.

She however encouraged all who participated to be stakeholders of the gentleman’s game.

“This is a phenomenon program that you had here and I will encourage everyone to be a stakeholder in this Obuasi Cricket Festival, so it could last for a lifetime, for generations to come. Because you have something massive here that I have not seen in America. America is a rich nation, but you are rich in cricket and in culture. As you are grassroot and you are being watered, make sure you grow. And perform your roles well in the society.”

Ms Petal successfully organised the 11th edition of the Georgia Women’s T20 Cricket Tournament in the USA. Captain of Ghana’s Senior Women’s National team, Rhyda Ofori Amanfo participated in that tournament as the Vice captain of defending champions Atlanta Pearls in May 2024.

Petal Samuels, in a brief speech during the closing ceremony and awards to winners after the mixed gender game revealed her plans to feature a team in next year’s edition.

“I am looking forward to bringing a team next year, in whatever capacity we are needed, we will be here. Because, I consider myself the backbone of cricket, not only in America, but the world; because I have been traveling miles to places and without the backbone, you cannot stand properly.”

Ms Petals however expressed her love for Rhyda and Samson Awe Awiah with a wonderful Gift presentation. In return, Rhyda presented the GWCA President with a wonderful plaque while Lawrence Ahadzi presented a team Ghana jersey from the recently held 13th African Games.

Sponsored by Underground Mining Alliance, the ‘Obuasi Cricket Festival’ which has given birth to ‘Obuasi Cricket Academy’ has the target of making cricket a household name, with several plans including visiting other regions.
