The Ghana Cricket Association (GCA) is set to host the International Cricket Council (ICC) Level 1 Umpire Tutors Course at the University of Ghana Sports Directorate from Tuesday, May 27 to Thursday, May 29, 2025.
Two ICC Master Educators, Lauren Agenbag and Thomas Mokorosi, will lead the course, training participants selected from five West African countries (Ghana, Cameroon, Mali, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia) in the fundamentals of umpire education.
Some participants began arriving on Sunday, and the intensive course, scheduled from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm daily, will equip 13 umpires with the necessary skills to train others in their respective countries.
Ghana’s Chief Umpire and Level 1 Tutor, Bruce Okine, highlighted the significance of the program:
“This is a milestone for us to get our umpires to the next level, and importantly, to empower them to train others. For the first time, we have two female participants, which is a huge step. After this course, they’ll be better positioned to officiate in our leagues and even in more competitive matches on the African scene.”
Lauren and Thomas recently facilitated a similar course in Eswatini, where participants from Botswana, Lesotho, and Mozambique were trained.
As part of its broader efforts to grow cricket across Africa and globally, the ICC continues to roll out “train-the-trainer” programs, aimed at increasing the number of qualified coaches, umpires, and administrators in the sport.
Earlier in February, Ghana successfully hosted an ICC Level 1 Coaches Tutor Course, training 15 participants in coaching education.
