The national male U-19 Cricket team is in Nigeria for the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, Africa Division 2 Qualifier, which began today (Friday, September 30) through to October 8, 2022 at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Package B’ Abuja Cricket Oval.
The team is expected to begin their Group A matches against Kenya on Saturday, October 1, at 9:30am local time (8:30 Ghana time) on NCF 1 ground.
They continue their Group B matches against Mozambique on Monday, October 3, on NCF 1 ground at 9:30am local time (8:30 Ghana time) and wrap up with Malawi on Wednesday, October 5, still at the same ground and same time.
Leading the 14-man squad is captain Paul Ayoleyine and vice-captain Lee Nyarko. Emmanuel Kemevor, Elijah Welaga Afula, Elisha Yellison Frimpong, Bernard Addo, David Asewo and Prince Ago Adotei all made the trip to Abuja.
Completing the playing body also include Emmanuel Nii Armah Annan, Ariz Sood, Prince Addea, Emmanuel Ofoh, Prince Julla and Prince Obeng.
The 50 over tournament will see the first two in the group qualify for the semi finals scheduled for Friday, October 7, with the finals and 3rd place pegged at Saturday, October 8, 2022.
With Coach Francis Kofi Bakiweyem and Seth Nti as Team Manager, the lads are expected to improve upon their 2018 performance in South Africa (finishing 3rd with 2 points in Group B).
Paul Ayoleyine scored the highest runs in a game (99*/90), against Lesotho, while Ghana’s total score, 337-7 was also the highest in the entire tournament in Potchefstroom.
Group B of the division 2 qualifiers has host Nigeria, Botswana, Sierra Leone and Rwanda.
