GYPA Urges Swift Resolution to Protracted Bawku Conflict
The Executive Director of Ghana Youth Arise for Peace (GYPA), Alex Ekow Mensah, has issued a passionate call for an immediate and lasting resolution to the longstanding conflict in Bawku, stressing the urgent need for national unity and leadership intervention.
Speaking in an interview, Mr. Mensah emphasized that the protracted crisis in the Bawku enclave has dragged on for far too long, causing loss of lives, displacing residents, and draining national resources that could otherwise be invested in critical development projects.
“Bawku is part of Ghana, and Ghana is known for its peace and hospitality. This conflict must come to a permanent end. It has lingered for too long, and we can’t afford to continue like this,” he stated.
Mr. Mensah expressed gratitude to traditional, religious, and political leaders who have made efforts toward peace but noted that more decisive and non-partisan action is required to restore lasting calm in the area.
“This is not a matter for political manipulation or silence. We must bring peace to Bawku. We are one people. We can’t be fighting ourselves,” he urged.
He also condemned the continuous chieftaincy-related disputes in the region, warning those involved that they are not above the law. He called on state authorities to enforce laws impartially and halt the encouragement or tolerance of divisive actions that fuel the crisis.
“We cannot allow chieftaincy litigations and illegal armed activities to go unchecked. Our leaders must take firm decisions now. The law must work. The people of Bawku deserve peace and a chance to thrive like the rest of Ghana,” he added.
Mr. Mensah’s appeal comes amid renewed concerns over rising tensions in the region, with many civil society organizations and peace advocates echoing the need for a permanent solution.
Ghana Youth Arise for Peace says it is prepared to work with all stakeholders, including youth groups, security agencies, and community leaders, to facilitate dialogue and reconciliation efforts aimed at restoring peace to Bawku.
