A nationwide demonstration organised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in protest against the Electoral Commission (EC) turned violent in Kumasi.

This was after the police clashed with some protesters at the Commission’s regional office.

This occurred after the agitated crowd was prevented from joining the NDC executives as they entered the regional office to present their petition to the Ashanti Regional EC boss as part of the Enough Is Enough protest.

The situation escalated into a scuffle, resulting in the breaking of barricades and the shattering of the office’s glass doors.

A police woman is said to have been injured in the process and another three were arrested amid the sounds of gunshots.

“In fact, I was finding a place to hide myself when I heard the shots. Then I got inside and realised that one man had also been arrested,” Luv FM’s Nana Boakye Yiadom told JoyNews.

Tensions remain high as some NDC executives meet with the commissioner in the building, away from the chaos outside.

The supporters outside are chanting demanding that the police grant them access to the facility.

Meanwhile, the Police is denying reports of any shooting incident at the Kumasi EC office adding that “no demonstrator has been injured by the Police.”

However, some demonstrators who went against the agreed arrangement by forcing their way into the compound of the EC office were restrained.
