The Greater Accra Sapholda Hockey League entered Week Two on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium, with the ladies taking center stage in thrilling fashion.
It was the Police Ladies who showed up fully armed, dousing the Fire Ladies and neutralizing their sparks with precision and discipline. The officers posted a commanding 2-0 victory, asserting their authority with goals in the third quarter that sealed the deal.
Though Fire tried to ignite chances and spark celebrations from their corner, their fans could only rise in anticipation—not in celebration—as the Police fans drowned out their cheers.
“We did very well in today’s game compared to last season’s match against Police. From goalkeeping to the bench, we did well. We lost the match because the umpires didn’t do well,” said GO2 Joanita Korwu, Captain of the Fire Ladies.
If Police were dominant, then GRA Ladies were simply ruthless. They went full throttle in their encounter against the Legon Knights Ladies, delivering the most brutal result of the season so far: a 10-0 hammering.
The Knights stumbled early, conceding two quick goals that shattered their rhythm. By halftime, it was 5-0—and the onslaught continued till the final whistle. It was a chastening day for Legon Knights, who now need serious introspection.
“Our ladies just didn’t have their day. It’s our first match and only our second appearance in the league,” said Captain Adwoa Amoah.
“Even though we lost, we weren’t expecting this scoreline. Our strategy didn’t work. But no team should think they’ll get as many goals as GRA did. We’re developing and testing strategies. Any team that underrates us will be surprised.”
In the final ladies’ match of the day, Army Ladies marched over Prisons Ladies, posting a solid 3-0 win. While the soldiers went to war, the prison wardens sought shelter.
“The game was a bit tough, but we sailed through,” said Lance Corporal Dede Copson Hagget.
“We’ll keep doing our best in subsequent games and aim to beat every opponent we face.”
In the Men’s Division B, the matchup between Ark Boys and Ark Giants brought youthful energy and pace to the pitch. But the Giants proved too strong for the Boys, running out 4-2 winners.
Meanwhile, Einstein Hockey Club, though missing Albert, got a 3-0 walkover against Young Financiers, who failed to turn up.
The Sapholda Hockey League continues on Saturday, May 17, 2025, with more mouth-watering fixtures on the horizon.
