SWAG AWARDS: Samson Awiah to be honored as Cricket Player of the year 2022

Ghana Cricket senior national player, Samson Kwasi Awe Awiah has been nominated by the Sports Writer’s Association of Ghana (SWAG) as the Cricketer of the year, at its 2022 Awards night slated for Saturday, January 28, 2023.

Samson, who is the vice-captain of the senior men’s national team wrapped up the year 2022 with a total of 302 runs from two international competitions and a total of 9 innings; the ACA T20 Cup Final in South Africa and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers in Rwanda.

Additionally, Samson who plays for Supreme Cricket Club in the domestic league has 5 wickets to his credit, which he took in a single match, against Karizma, as he has been a wicket keeper for all previous games played.

A portion of a letter addressed to Samson reads “Compliments from the Executive Council of the Sports Writers’ Association of Ghana (SWAG) to you for your sterling performance in the year 2022.

“The SWAG is pleased to inform you that you have been nominated for the Cricketer of the Year category in the 47th SWAG Awards events scheduled to take place at the Accra International Conference Center on January 28, 2023.”

best batter accolade last month

His performance, especially at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup qualifiers in December 2022 can not be overlooked. He was adjudged the Best Batter at ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier in Rwanda, having scored 227 runs, off 171 balls, from 7 innings.

Awiah became the second highest scorer in a single game, with 96 runs, of 69 balls, not out, with the highest boundary fours (29), as captain Obed Harvey scored 107 runs, off 54 balls, not out.

Samson, in a brief interview with TalksenseSports says he feels proud.

“I feel proud being a Ghanaian for this massive nomination. I believe all the outstanding performances which won me man of the match awards and the best batter award outside my beloved country was an away recognition, but to be a nominee for SWAG Awards greater. Since this is my home, I believe it completes the chain of recognition outside and in Ghana”

SWAG is an umbrella body of sports writers in Ghana, affiliated to Association of International Press Sports (AIPS) and has been Organising this Awards since 1975 to honor deserving sports men and women.

Samson is the first active Cricket player to have been nominated by SWAG.
