Mr. Prosper Tachie has retained his position as Chairman of the Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) following a resounding endorsement in an election held on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at the Christian Village in Santasi, Kumasi.
The former Wesley College of Education trainee, who ran unopposed, received 627 YES votes against 14 NO votes, representing 97.82% of the total votes cast during the 7th Quadrennial Conference of the Ashanti Regional GNAT.
Mr. Tachie thus maintains his role for another four-year term. It will be recalled that he first secured the position on August 5, 2021, in Ejisu, when he polled 310 votes (51.32%) to beat his sole contender, Mr. Owusu Kwabena Nketia, who had 294 votes (48.68%).
In the 2025 elections, Mr. Elvis Prince Biney was elected Vice-Chairman with 626 YES votes against 21 NO votes, while Mr. Isaac Osei Frimpong won the Treasurer position with a commanding 638 YES votes to 12 NO votes.
Madam Veronica Sowah secured the GNATLAS Representative role with 151 votes, defeating Madam Mavis Amaning Danso, who had 54 votes. In the National Executive Council (NEC) Representative contest, Madam Augustina Agyekumwaa emerged victorious with 419 votes, followed by Madam Sylvia Kusi Akyaa with 142 votes and Madam Stella Owusu-Boatemaa with 87 votes.
Mr. Emmanuel Enning was elected as the Basic School Representative after polling 263 votes, ahead of Mr. Bernard Sarfo Sarpong (70 votes) and Mr. Seidu Issah (61 votes). Madam Rabiatu Ali Sigri-Naah will serve as the Senior High School Representative, having won with 130 votes. Mr. Owusu Bempa received 30 votes, and Mr. Kwabena Asare had just 3 votes.
Mr. Kwadwo Kankam received overwhelming endorsement to become the Teachers’ Fund Representative, with 636 YES votes against 14 NO votes.
Both Madam Akosua Frimpomaah and Rev. Esther Donkor were endorsed unopposed as Regional Trustee and Regional Education Office Representative, respectively. Mr. Ebenezer Agyemang won the Regional Youth Coordinator role, defeating Mr. Norbert T-C Otibo and Mr. Louis Owusu Atta.
The newly elected officers were sworn in by National Executive Representative Madam Yaa Kumi Yeboah, who administered the oaths of office and secrecy.
Speaking after the swearing-in, Mr. Prosper Tachie expressed appreciation to the delegates for their unwavering support and urged continued collaboration as the executives work to enhance the welfare of teachers.
“Permit me, on behalf of the elected Ashanti Regional executives, to express our profound gratitude for the love and support we’ve witnessed here since the beginning of this conference. It may seem like a victory for those of us standing here, but it is a victory for GNAT Ashanti.
“It’s a reaffirmation of hard work, resilience, and perseverance. We’ve taken the oath of office, and though we didn’t make big promises, our unwavering commitment to the welfare of teachers will continue to guide us into the next chapter,” he said.
Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, who graced the occasion, acknowledged the invaluable role teachers play in shaping Ghana’s future through education. He conveyed President John Dramani Mahama’s appreciation to all educators for their dedication and selflessness, especially in the face of economic challenges and systemic difficulties.
